Snooker originally rose to popularity in the 19th century, being invented in India by British army officers stationed in Jabalpur in the late 1800s. The first manifestation of the game was known as ‘Black Pool’ before it evolved into snooker.
The word ‘snooker’ is believed to derive from a comment made by Chamberlain about a player who missed a shot, whom he called ‘a real snooker’, which is slang for a first year cadet.
Snooker has featured many legendary players throughout its history, including Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Sleby and Steve Davis. All achieved great success and have won multiple world titles, and all began playing snooker as beginners at one point or another! Could you end joining this illustrious roster of names?
Learning snooker is not only fun but a brilliant way to meet other people. There are snooker clubs across the UK including those at local pubs, so you can easily meet like-minded enthusiasts. It’s also a mentally-stimulating sport, which is often referred to as ‘chess on a billiard table’.
